Some went through basic and AIT training together while others met on the west coast while waiting for unit orders and still others met in the jungles and paddies and mountains of Nam.....the amount of time spent together was not a factor.....what you did with that time was........

From all across the land they came...the farmers and ranchers..the surfers..bikers..skiers..they were white and black..Mexicans and Purto Rican...from all walks of life they came...the country boys and the city dwellers...the fisherman and the oil well workers...sharing each day and night together...stories of home...what they left and hoped for ...when this is all over...there were so many differences among us...religion...background...customs and traditions...YET..we all had one thing in common...Our Age....and our Fate

Though many have... most did not go to school together...we were not from the same city..state..or even time zone...yet strange bonds were formed that only a brother could know...a bond that began the very first day..
The army,in its infinate wisdom and usual fashion, sent
the new recruits from the north...south...and the new recruits from the south ...north...guess you had to be there...In my little town segeration was no big thing...we
went to schools together and did all the sports...hung out
and played together...there were some raceisms...stay out of the pool and leave my daughters alone....you know the kind.....that all changed for me when we hit the Mason-Dixon Line on a train from Philly to North Carolina...and for the Black Brothers on the train with me...the war got a whole lot uglyier.......

Wakeup.....dress...run...eat..sweat...KP...
drill all day...shower...lights out...together...
repeat next day...together...by the numbers...
trained together and went on passes and leaves
together....went to Nam...dug foxholes...put out
claymores...feared...cried...suffered and bled
together....yet died in so many different ways...

Thoughts will always be.....why him...what would life have been...if the chance was given...too many good young men paid the ultamate price...childhood days are all these hero's had...the dreams of the future never to be..
So much was lost by so very many...the girl back home planning the wedding postponed till your return.....the plans of college...the bussiness venture delayed till your return....the parents who dreamed of having grand children ...the children..whose fathers face and voice are never to be seen nor heard....PUFF........POOF...... all gone.....

[Flag Rule - 1.2K]
        "From Dark to Light" [Spacer]
An Original Poem by Owen F. Devlin
Dedicated to all who still wait to come home.
On the 30th anniversary of my return from Vietnam

I faced death
[Spacer] and don't know why,
I'm the one
[Spacer] who did not die.

Many are gone
[Spacer] some whom I knew,
Why am I
[Spacer] one of the chosen few.

I sought the answer everywhere:
[Spacer] the land, the sea, the sky,
And still no answer anywhere,
[Spacer] why I did not die.

My friends, my family, all who care
[Spacer] are surely there for me,
Why is it they can't understand
[Spacer] this haunting mystery.

Only those who've made the trek
[Spacer] Who've faced it day by day,
Can really know the random game
[Spacer] That gruesome death will play.

The answer has to lie beyond
[Spacer] the realm of humankind,
We have to look beyond ourselves
[Spacer] the answer there to find.

Somewhere, someone sees the path
[Spacer] where all who've gone have trod,
For me I found the answer
[Spacer] when I gave it up to God.
